So I had a little tete a tete with Katy Perry… sort of. No, in actuality I’ve had a bit of a crush on Ms. Perry since long before she got with that silly Brit Russell Brand. Now they’re all set to get married in Maui in October. Hey Aldous Snow, I saw her first!!

No but seriously, I thought Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Benny Blanco killed the production on this song and I just loved it the minute I heard it. It’s got a good vibe and I wanted to provide my take- a teenage dream of who else? Katy Perry herself.

As the story goes….

The year is 1931. Persistent rumors of a tentacled sea monster attacking ships in the Pacific Ocean have created fear amongst sailors, disrupting the shipping lanes and slowing trade. Captain Theo Martins and his assistant board their vessel and make their way to the deep blue sea to find out what is really going on.

After months scouring the vast ocean, the monster strikes, ramming the naval frigate. The ship’s hull is destroyed and Captain Theo is thrown overboard. He drifts in the ocean, eventually finding a strange-looking metal vessel, and realizes the “monster” is a man-made “submerging boat,” that has been deserted.

Blown far off course, Theo enters uncharted territory. In this new land there’s a great cave, and inside it lies “The Feather,” a treasure guarded by a great nest of giant squid for the last two centuries. If used improperly “The Feather” could harm millions.

As he nears the cave, a squid attacks, and he’s caught in its tentacles. Ned, having escaped from captivity in the struggle, jumps to Theo’s rescue and saves his captor’s life. Theo takes hold of “The Feather” and intends to share his gem of the sea with the world.

“When I began promoting 2008’s The Birth, I became familiar with another fellow whom I continued to see on the blogs named J.Cole. I became a fan of his music and eventually ran into him last summer. We talked and just like I knew who he was from the blogs and such, he knew me the same. I wrote a blog entry about the experience a few months ago. From the Blueprint 3 Tour to his sold out SOB’s show, Cole has maintained his humility and it’s very inspiring. When I heard, “Who Dat,” I thought the beat was ridiculously hot and that Cole killed it. It compelled me to spar with him, simple as that.”

The soulful slow piano rises and begins “The Letter.” Backed by an Ossie Davis sample in the beginning and end, Theo has the chance to reminisce on the past, discuss the present, and predict the future. Despite having such a simple beat, it brought out the best in him lyric wise. You have to really listen to get what he is talking about because he doesn’t just come out and “this is what happened in my past, my present, & future.” Moving in to “The Monocle,” seems like it’s an added version of “The Letter” beat but with a more energetic flow.

The hate doesn’t bother Theo and that is what “Kirby’s Airwalk” is all about, being above the clouds and higher than the hate. The art of storytelling is the reason “Something To Remember” was created. Theo describes 2 different people who never met and live in different areas. The message behind it is that just ‘cause we “claim” we won’t become something, doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Always keep an eye open and be in control. The ending is actually the beginning. With “Checkin’ In,” Theo lets you know that you can be on Jay-Z’s level and still get demolished lyrically. Backed with lines like “’Cause honestly, I will body anybody on the record in a second so forget it don’t regret it” it’s hard to argue his point.

This was a small project but it was precise with everything. Nobody can say this project doesn’t represent everything Hip Hop is. The only complaint about it is that it was just a pudding cup instead of a pile of cookies meaning it should’ve been a bigger project. 6 songs is good but the last song dwindles and leaves you wanting more. Hopefully the response for it is good enough to get the duo to make a full length version of “You Can’t Do This On Television.”

Theo Martins – You Can’t Do That On Television (Direct)

Theo recently partnered with DJBooth.net, and the site will release his long-awaited EP “You Can’t Do That On Television” this month. The project is a collaboration with upcoming Ohio-based producer $port, and the name takes its cue from the Canadian sketch comedy television program, which eventually became a Nickelodeon staple in the early 90s. The sound is futuristic, but inspired by that era. The first leak song from the EP is “Kirby’s Airwalk.”

I’ll have to re-dig up my review I did for this last year. Super good EP.
