A famous saying goes “third times a charm” and it seems to be working in the favor of North Carolina’s young legend, Rain. Never has someone on the East been on such a consistency path appearing on blogs weekly for an uncountable number of weeks. A lot of the material was set loose with no signs of making any projects. Just call First In Flight the East Coast Brick Squad….with skills. Rain returns with the third installment of his street album series, American Dreamin’, hosted by P. Smirf and DJ Folk.

The intros off all three projects have reflected his growth in this game since 2007. He was more wild and hungry with his statements on the intro for his original AD (“If Nas wanna be a nigga let that nigga be a nigga on his own”). The second intro showcased the same but with sharper, pinpointed lyrics. On AD3’s intro, he takes a smoother beat to ride through with reflection upon his life, career and also celebrities who have had rough careers.

Boasting no guest features except one hook from Tyler Wood, Rain really stepped it up with his lyrics and seeking out top notch production. On “Home Sweet Home”, P. King provides a riding around beat for Rain to tell a tale of what he sees in his surroundings.  Despite Siege Monstracity’s “Another Episode” beat being used by Bishop Lamont earlier this year, Rain adds more energy to Dr. Dre sampled production. Ski Beatz makes a notable production on “Gangsta Music”, which slides right into AD3’s overall sound and flow.

His style has evolved but besides “Get Loud”, none of the records could pop off in a club. This is some music that you have on when you home alone and want to appreciate some lyrics, hear some stories, etc. It’s so damn good quality music as well but it only fits one type of rap. Maybe his intention was in that direction but everyone knows Rain can set the club on fire.

Rain’s rise to success consists of consistency, good music and a hard grind. He’s not quite there but AD3 has given him one more star and a stripe to add to his growing flag. You can sense the hunger with every song, feature, freestyle and whatever else he can lend his voice and rhymes to.
