Review: The Dream – Love King

+ comments

The Dream has already solidified his spot in this generation of R&B with two incredibly well received albums and the countless hits he has written. Dream continues to raise the bar with everything he does in his career. The man values his sound a lot to which you have to respect him. His albums have structure and his third solo album, Love King, is no different.

Leading off with the title track, Dream sings about the countless girls he has across the globe. It’s get a nice dancing vibe but it also sets it up for the next song, “Make Up Bag”. Like a lot of his music, this ladies potential anthem has an infectious chorus that plays, “If you ever make your girlfriend mad/don’t let your good girl go bad/drop five stacks on a make-up bag”. The track also features the album’s only guest appearance with a story telling T.I.

The highs of the album are “Sex Intelligent” and “Sex Intelligent (Remix)”. It’s back to back love making music that’s simply amazing. You should know from “Love King (Remix)” that Terius knows how to do a proper remix. Equipped with a new beat and all new lyrics, but keeping the same concept as the original, these two songs super charge the album and do what “Panties To The Side” should have accomplished.

His story telling abilities are an even greater added effect like on “Nikki Pt. 2”, where he catches up with his former love and ultimately ends up in a depressive and angry mind state over secrets and lies. This leads to the drowning of Nikki’s heart on the love driven, harsh “Abyss”. He takes a risk with it being an R&B artist and making it so brutal.

Some of the songs drag on a lot and stay extremely repetitive. Take “Priceless” for example. The title is heavily used on the chorus over and over again. Clocking in at six minutes, this could’ve had a little more creativity added to it. “All Black Everything” isn’t saying anything special or new.

Love King sticks to the proper script and create more timeless R&B music to add to his growing catalog.  There have been mixed reviews and comparisons to his previous albums. Regardless those comparisons, it is one well constructed album for the most part. It takes an artist to make an album. It takes genius to make it flow just right.
